Shabana's film debut came in 1974 with Shyam Benegal's 'Ankur,' a landmark in the new-wave parallel cinema movement known for its serious content and realism. Her role in the film garnered her first National Film Award for Best Actress and a Filmfare Award nomination. This debut established her as a formidable talent in the industry.

Her activism includes supporting child survival, fighting AIDS, and advocating for communal harmony. In 1997, she was nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian parliament, and has been a member of the National Integration Council and the National AIDS Commission.

The accolade was bestowed on the veteran actress five times: in 1975, 1983, 1984, 1985, and 1999. Additionally, she is the first actress to have won the Best Actress category at the National Film Awards three times in a row.
