Ayaz Memon

A graduate in economics and law from Bombay University, Ayaz Memon is a  renowned Indian sports writer, journalist, columnist, author, and former lawyer. Beginning his journey in 1978 with a chance job at Sportsweek magazine while still in law school, Ayaz quickly made a name for himself in the field. He has edited prominent newspapers such as Mid-Day, Bombay Times, and DNA, and has served as the editor of Sportsweek magazine and the sports editor for the Times of India and the Independent. 

His expertise and insights are now shared through his roles as a consulting editor with NewsX and a columnist for leading publications like Hindustan Times, Mint, Mail Today, Deccan Chronicle, and occasionally the Times of India.

Throughout his career, Ayaz has covered over 300 Test matches and more than 400 One-Day Internationals worldwide, including nine Cricket World Cups, the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the 1988 Olympics, Wimbledon in 1991 and 1993, the 1998 and 2010 Commonwealth Games, and the 1990 Asian Games. 

His firsthand experience of Kapil Dev's legendary 175* against Zimbabwe in the 1983 Cricket World Cup, a match not recorded by the BBC due to a strike, marks him as one of the few eyewitnesses to this historic event.

In the digital age, Ayaz continues to influence sports journalism through his active presence on Twitter, his involvement in shows like ‘Firstpost Gameplan’, and his partnership with DigiOsmosis to launch the sports website Sportswallah.com. His daily news bulletins on the Sportswallah Facebook page keep fans updated on the latest sports events.

An accomplished author, Ayaz has penned several books, including 'Sachin Tendulkar: Master Blaster,' 'Virat Kohli: Reliable Rebel,' 'MS Dhoni: Captain Cool,' and 'Yuvraj Singh: Powerful Elegance.' Ayaz has also co-authored works such as 'The Best in the World: India’s Ten Greatest World Cup Matches' with actor Tom Alter.
