Humsufi, the brainchild of six passionate musicians hailing from Kolkata, embarked on their musical journey four years ago with a simple yet profound aim: to create music that resonates deeply with their collective spirit. What transpired from this shared vision is a unique and captivating sound that defies categorization but can be aptly described as Indo World Sufi Folk Rock, or simply, ‘Sufusion’. With a seamless blend of rock, fusion, and qawwali, Humsufi has carved out a distinct niche for itself in the music industry.
At the heart of Humsufi's appeal lies their profound understanding and appreciation of Indian classical music, which is the cornerstone of their sonic exploration. Drawing from the rich repertoire of sub-genres within Sufi music—such as Qawwali, Qaul, Ghazal, and folk songs—the band weaves together mesmerizing melodies that transports listeners to realms both ancient and modern.
Since its official inception in 2012, Humsufi has been on a mission to challenge the conventional norms of songwriting and composition. Doing away with the old-school approach of lengthy intros and gradual build-ups, the band infuses its music with a sense of urgency and dynamism, engaging audiences from the first note.
One of Humsufi's defining characteristics is their innovative ability to reimagine classic Sufi compositions. From blending Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's iconic ‘Sochta Hoon’ with a Latin American flair to infusing ‘Piya Re’ with the soulful sounds of Rajasthani folk music, the band breathes new life into age-old melodies while paying homage to their cultural roots.
Fueling Humsufi's sonic explorations is a diverse lineup of exceptionally talented musicians. Multi-instrumentalist Shibankar Paul leads the charge, skillfully navigating the melody section with his virtuosic command over 32 different instruments, 15 of which grace the stage during performances. Alongside him, bass guitarist Debarshi Das and drummer Victor Mitra provide the rhythmic backbone, infusing each composition with energy and vitality.
