Ravi Chary
About
Ravindra Chary popularly known as Ravi Chary is the first Sitarist to have emerged from the Goan landscape, he is the son of the late Pandit Prabhakar Chary, a tabla player and a musicologist.
Ravi started learning Sitar from Prof. Abdul Karim khan at the age of 11 and later on shifting to Mumbai he learnt from Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan and Ustad Shahid Parvez.
He is also a coveted tabla and harmonium player and he learned harmonium from Pt. Tulsidas Borkar.
Ravi has collaborations with foreign artists like Salif Keita, Angélique Kidjo, Ben Watkins, Robert Miles, Pacco Sairre, Kudsi Eulgner, Kai Eckhardt, and more, exploring various facets of music in the contemporary form.
He has performed with some of the best Indian musicians like Kishori Amonkar, Mrudangam wizard Umalayapuram Shivaraman, Ustad Sultan khan, Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, Trilok Gurtu, Louiz Banks, Sivamani, Merlin D'Souza, Ustad Allarakha Khan, Gaan Saraswati Kishori Amonkar, Vidwan Vikku Vinayakram, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Sri Umayalpuram Sivaraman, and many more.
Ravi formed a band Ravi Chary Crossing with Gino banks, Satyajit Talwalkar, Sheldon D’silva, and Sangeet Haldipur.
He has performed at various international festivals like WOMAD, Glastonbury Festival, and Bumbershoot, to name a few.
Ravi has given music for various songs for Bollywood films including Munnabhai M.B.B.S., Kill Dill, Bajirao Mastani, NH10 and Phillauri among others, and has also been a part of Coke Studio India.

- Ravi is a recipient of a Fellowship from HRD, ministry of India.
- He received ‘The Surmani Award’ from Sur Singar Academy
- He has also received the ‘Naad Chintamani Award’.
- Ravi’s recitals have been broadcast on radio and television.
- Ravi’s album Miles from India and Ravi Chary Crossing received a Grammy nomination.

His performance bears adequate testament to his genuine creative abilities, lending his music a unique eclectic approach while remaining firmly rooted in the rich classical tradition.
With the inclusion of jazz, flamenco, and Bollywood in his territory, and despite an eclectic repertoire, Rakesh remains rooted around a detailed classical core. His forte is in blending his flute without really losing its identity in mixed instruments concerts and he continues to captivate his audience with it.
