Vani Murthy, affectionately known as Worm Rani is a social media sensation who has enlightened audiences on Instagram with her transformative message of waste management and composting. At 60 years old, Vani embarked on a remarkable journey from homemaker to changemaker, after she witnessed tonnes of garbage at the Mavallipura landfill in 2009. Witnessing the environmental devastation caused by millions of tonnes of garbage, she made a solemn vow to revolutionize her approach to waste management, determined to ensure that her waste would never contribute to such desolation again.
Vani's commitment to sustainable living didn't stop at her doorstep. She became a pivotal figure in the Solid Waste Management Roundtable (SWMRT), a collective dedicated to promoting decentralized and sustainable waste management practices in Bengaluru. As a founding member, she played a crucial role in advocating for a circular economy of waste, emphasizing the importance of citizen engagement, waste segregation, and creating dignified working conditions for waste-pickers.
On Instagram, Vani spreads her message of eco-friendly living through engaging reels and informative posts that educate her audience on a myriad of sustainable practices, from composting and waste segregation to growing vegetables at home and traveling sustainably.
Vani also actively participates in community campaigns and initiatives, such as the Malleswaram Resident Welfare Association's cleanliness drives and the 'Wealth Out of Waste' campaign.
