Yusuf Pathan is an Indian former cricketer and a politician affiliated with the Trinamool Congress. His illustrious cricket career began with his debut in first-class cricket in the 2001/02 season. Known for his explosive right-handed batting and effective right-arm off-break bowling, Yusuf quickly made a name for himself in the cricketing world. Yusuf was an integral member of the Indian cricket team that won the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 and the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. He made his international debut in the final of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007 against Pakistan, where he opened the batting and contributed crucial runs.
Despite facing ups and downs in his international career, Yusuf's domestic performances, including his standout show in the 2010 Duleep Trophy final, where he scored a century and a double century, established him as a formidable player.
His tenure in the Indian Premier League (IPL) further highlighted his talent. Yusuf was instrumental in Rajasthan Royals' triumph in the first season of the IPL in 2008 and continued to deliver notable performances, including the fastest IPL century off 37 balls against Mumbai Indians in 2010. Later, he was acquired by Kolkata Knight Riders, where he played pivotal roles, including hitting one of the fastest fifties in IPL history.
Additionally, he co-founded the Cricket Academy of Pathans with his brother Irfan, partnering with former India coach Greg Chappell to mentor young cricketers.
Transitioning from cricket to politics, Yusuf Pathan made a significant mark by contesting and winning the 2024 Indian general election from the Baharampur Lok Sabha constituency on a Trinamool Congress ticket. He defeated the incumbent Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury of the Indian National Congress by a notable margin of 85,022 votes. As of June 2024, Pathan serves as a Member of Parliament, actively contributing to the political landscape of West Bengal.
