A world class rapper and global superstar, Divine aka Vivian Wilson Fernandes within no time has become one of the most popular Indie artists in the country and has transformed India's ‘gully rap' scene.
With some great songs like ‘Yeh Mera Bombay,’ ‘Kohinoor,’ ‘Jungli Sher’, ‘Kaam 25’, the talented artist amassed over a billion streams across audio and video platforms. He broke through with the release of his song ‘Mere Gully Mein’ in 2019 in the super-hit movie ‘Gully Boy’, which was inspired by him and his fellow Mumbai rapper Naezy.
Divine also collaborated with Nucleya on another hit track, ‘Scene Kya Hai’ off Nucleya's album ‘Raja Baja’. He was featured on ‘Daru Daru’ with Deep Jandu and Gangis Khan, his first commercially oriented song.
He appeared on the BBC Asian Network on ‘The Charlie Sloth Show’ and was the first Hindi-speaking rapper to freestyle on the show and also the first to rap in Hindi.
He made his debut at the ‘64th Annual Grammy Awards’ in 2022 becoming the first Indian hip-hop star to attend the Grammys.
He appeared on the cover of the Metallica song ‘The Unforgiven’ with Vishal Dadlani and Shor Police, for the charity tribute album ‘The Metallica Blacklist’, released in September 2021.
In 2019, Divine announced the founding of his new company Gully Gang Entertainment, a record label. ‘Gully Gang Cypher’ was the first song to be released under the label which featured several rap artists.
There is also a documentary based on Divine’s real life, titled ‘Gully Life:The Story of Divine’. In 2021, he also won the award for ‘Best Indian Act’ at the ‘MTV Europe Music Awards’.
Divine is credited for putting Mumbai on the map as far as India’s hip-hop scene is concerned. He has played a huge role in the rise of the ‘Gully rap movement’ and has created a huge legacy for himself.
