Lezim Dance Artists
About
Lezim Dance Artists, are a group of skilled performers of Lezim also known as Lazium or Lezium, a vibrant folk dance from Maharashtra, renowned for its high-energy performances and cultural significance. The dance is named after the unique musical instrument, a wooden stick adorned with jingling cymbals, that dancers skillfully manipulate to create a rhythmic and captivating performance.
Originating in 1986, Lezim traces its roots back to the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji, where it began as a sport designed to build the strength and muscles of men. Over time, this sport evolved into a celebrated dance form, preserved by communities and performed during significant festivals, particularly the Ganesha festival in Maharashtra.
Lezim Dance Artists display vigorous physicality, which makes this art form both a dance and a form of exercise. The dancers, typically a group of 12, engage in a series of dynamic movements, including stepping, hopping, squatting, and bending, all synchronized to the rhythmic jingling of the cymbals. This synchronization is a hallmark of Lezim, creating a mesmerizing visual and auditory experience for the audience. The dance also includes a special sequence where performers form human pyramids, adding to the spectacle.
The Lezim Dance Artists wear traditional costumes, including white kurtas, pajamas, and colorful belts, topped with vibrant turbans. The color-coordinated attire enhances the visual impact of the performance, making it a majestic and unforgettable experience for any audience.
Ideal for cultural festivals, corporate events, or any occasion that seeks to showcase the rich traditions of Maharashtra, the Lezim Dance Artists bring a lively and authentic cultural performance that resonates with audiences of all ages.
