Malala Yousafzai

The youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize Laureate | Education Activist | Author

About

Malala Yousafzai from Pakistan, is a renowned education activist and the youngest-ever Nobel Peace Prize laureate. Her advocacy for women's and children's education, particularly in her native Swat Valley, where the Pakistani Taliban had imposed severe restrictions on girls' schooling, has made her a global symbol of courage and resilience. At just 17 years old, Malala received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, becoming the youngest laureate in history. She is the second Pakistani and the only Pashtun to be honored with this prestigious award, reflecting her profound impact on the global stage.

Raised in a Yusufzai Pashtun family, Malala was inspired by her father's activism and humanitarian efforts, as well as by prominent figures like Abdul Ghaffar Khan, Barack Obama, and Benazir Bhutto. Her journey into activism began at the age of 11 when she wrote a blog under the pseudonym Gul Makai for BBC Urdu, documenting life under Taliban rule. Her bravery in speaking out was further highlighted by a New York Times documentary and earned her Pakistan's first National Youth Peace Prize in 2011.

On October 9, 2012, Malala's life took a dramatic turn when she was targeted and shot by a Taliban gunman on a bus for her outspoken advocacy. The attack, which left her critically injured, garnered widespread international support and condemnation. Despite the grave danger, Malala's resilience shone through as she recovered in Birmingham, UK, and continued her advocacy work with even greater determination.

In the wake of her recovery, Malala co-founded the Malala Fund with Shiza Shahid, focusing on global education initiatives. Her autobiography, ‘I Am Malala’, co-authored in 2013, became an international bestseller and further strengthened her place as a leading advocate for education.

In 2015, the Oscar-shortlisted documentary ‘He Named Me Malala’ brought her story to an even broader audience. Her influence was recognized by Time magazine, which featured her as one of the most influential people globally in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Malala's academic achievements are equally impressive. She completed her secondary education at Edgbaston High School in Birmingham and went on to study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, graduating in 2020. Her dedication to education continued as she became the youngest-ever Honorary Fellow at Linacre College, Oxford, in 2023.
