Mardani Khel Artists
About
Mardani Khel Artists perform the traditional Indian martial arts, Mardani Khel deeply rooted in the history and culture of Maharashtra. These ancient combat techniques are particularly known for their mastery of uniquely Indian weapons such as the ‘patta’ (a flexible sword) and ‘vita’ (a corded lance). Mardani Khel, originating in the Deccan region, gained prominence during the reign of the legendary Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This armed martial art was an integral part of the Maratha military strategies, often employed alongside the famed guerrilla warfare technique, ‘Ganimi Kava’. The art form is practiced by both men and women, reflecting its versatility and enduring appeal.
The weaponry used in Mardani Khel is as varied as it is lethal. The ‘dand-patta’, a double-edged flexible sword, allows for rapid, horizontal strikes, while the ‘bhala’, a spear, is designed for close combat, with movements akin to those of a lathi (stick). The ‘vita’, a weapon developed to extend the reach of the spear, incorporates a long rope for retractable strikes over a distance.
Another unique weapon is the ‘maduvu’, crafted from two deer horns, and the bagh ‘nakh’, a deadly claw-like device worn on the fingers. The ‘dhop’, a formidable four-foot-long sword, was mandatory for all soldiers in Shivaji's army.
Mardani Khel Artists’ techniques are deeply entrenched in real war tactics, with formations designed to counter multiple opponents simultaneously. Mardani Khel Artists often position themselves back-to-back, ensuring a 360-degree defense. The traditional attire worn during these performances adds to the cultural significance, with women donning the Nauvari saree and men wearing the ‘mandchol’, a thigh-length tunic paired with knee-length breeches. Both also wear the ‘mundasa’ headdress and leather ‘mojaris’, completing the authentic look.
Mardani Khel Artists showcase not just a dance, but a powerful display of traditional combat techniques and weaponry, deeply rooted in the valorous legacy of the Marathas. Their performances are visually captivating and rich in heritage, offering a unique and thrilling experience that will leave your audience in awe. Perfect for cultural festivals, heritage events, or any occasion seeking an authentic and dynamic spectacle.
