Maj. Gen. G.D. Bakshi
About
Major General GD Bakshi is a highly decorated Indian Army veteran, strategic thinker, and widely recognised public voice on national security and military affairs. Commissioned into the 'Jammu and Kashmir Rifles', his career spans over three decades of active service, beginning with his role in the Indo-Pak War of 1971 on the Eastern front.
Over the years, he held key command and operational roles across some of India’s most sensitive conflict zones. He commanded a battalion in the Kaksar sector during the Kargil region tensions and later led counter-insurgency operations in the challenging terrains of Kishtwar and the RajouriPoonch belt as part of the elite 'Rashtriya Rifles'. His leadership during these assignments earned him a reputation for handling complex ground situations with clarity and resolve.
He also served multiple tenures at the 'Directorate General of Military Operations' during critical periods, including Operations "Pawan" and "Vijay", contributing to strategic planning at the highest levels. As the first BGS (Information Warfare) at Northern Command, he played a key role in shaping India’s early approach to psychological operations and information warfare.
Post-retirement, he transitioned into academia and public discourse, teaching at the 'National Defence College' and contributing extensively to strategic literature. A PhD holder in Strategic Studies, he has authored over 45 books covering military history, geopolitics, and figures like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He currently serves as the editor of ‘Indian Military Review’ - a digital-first, independent media platform, and is a frequent presence across national media platforms, known for his direct and spirited articulation of India’s security concerns.
