Shekhar Kapur
About
Shekhar Kapur, a film director of international repute is also an actor and producer and is known for his outstanding contribution to Hindi cinema.
His directorial debut in the cult Bollywood film Masoom in 1983 won him the Filmfare Critics Award for ‘Best Movie of the Year’. It starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar.
Shekhar started his career as an actor in the movie Jaan Hazir Hai in 1975 and later appeared in several Hindi television dramas, such as Udaan, Upanyaas, Drishti, Nazar and more.
Shekhar’s next directorial was Mr. India starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi and Amrish Puri which was a huge blockbuster hit.
He gained international recognition with the 1994 Bollywood film Bandit Queen which premiered in the Directors Fortnight section of the 1994 Cannes Film Festival and was screened at the Edinburgh Film Festival.
A few of his notable works include Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and The Four Feathers among others.
Shekhar lent his voice for Mohandas Gandhi in the Charkha audiobook titled The Story of My Experiments with Truth, alongside Nandita Das as narrator.
In 2013, Kapur hosted the TV show Pradhanmantri on ABP News and has also served as a judge on the reality TV series India's Got Talent, aired on Colors.
He has produced the films Dil Se.., The Guru and the Documentary film Bollywood: The Greatest Love Story Ever Told.
He was a member of the jury at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival in May 2010.

- Shekhar received the Filmfare Award for ‘Best Film (Critics)’ for Masoom in 1983.
- Shekhar won the National Film Award for ‘Best Feature Film in Hindi’ and Filmfare Award for ‘Best Film (Critics)’ & ‘Best Director’ for Bandit Queen in 1994.
- He won the ‘Best Director’ at the National Board of Review Awards and the BAFTA Award for ‘Outstanding British Film’ for Elizabeth in 1998.
- Shekhar was conferred with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India, in 2000.
- Shekhar was appointed as the president of the FTTI society and the chairman of the FTTI Governing Council in 2020.
