About
Known for her stupendous mastery over Indian classical ragas, Shilpa Rao is a playback singer, who rose to fame after her debut song ‘Tose Naina’ was released while she was a college student.
She later sang the song ‘Khuda Jaane’ from ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ in 2008. The song was a huge success & earned her a Screen award.
She went on to sing some other very popular songs like ‘Mudi Mudi Ittefaq Se’ for ‘Paa’, ‘Ishq Shava’ for ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, ‘Malang’ for ‘Dhoom 3’, ‘Meherbaan’ for ‘Bang Bang!’ and many more.
Shilpa Rao became only the second ever Indian musician to sing in the famous Coke Studio Pakistan with the song "Paar Chanaa De" 2016. In the same year her rendition of the song ‘Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo’ for the film ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ received critical acclaim.
In 2014 she received the ‘Best Music Debut award’ at the ‘GiMA Award’ for the song ‘Dum Dum’ from Coke Studio Season 2.
Her collaboration with composer-sitarist Anoushka Shankar last year, on the album 'Love Letters', got her the ‘Best Global Music Album’ nomination for the ‘Grammy Awards 2021’.
Shilpa Rao is a singer who has created her own identity as she experiments with her voice and often changes her vocal texture to express different songs. Aside from her playback singing, Shilpa Rao's participation in various live performances and collaborations with international artists have expanded her global presence.
